What are Grants and Scholarships?

  • Completing the FAFSA is the first step to funding because it will automatically check your eligibility for any federal or state grants.
  • It is important to apply early because some of these funds do deplete.
  • The following are grants for which the completion of the FAFSA will check:
    • NC Education Lottery Scholarship
      • Enrolled in NC Community College or UNC
    • NC Community College Grant
      • Enrolled in NC Community College
    • UNC Need Based Grant
      • Enrolled in one of the 16 UNC system campuses
    • NC Need Based Scholarship
      • Enrolled in an eligible NC independent institution

  • Other types of aid like scholarships have application processes.
  • There are different types of scholarships including:
    • Need-based scholarships: determined by financial circumstances
    • Merit-based scholarships: determined by achievement, a special talent or skill or other qualifying factor
    • Special-circumstance scholarships: determined by military service, unique interest, disability status, etc.
