Direct PLUS Loans for Graduate/Professional Students

Direct PLUS Loans for Graduate/Professional Students are low-interest, federally insured loans to help students who are enrolled, or accepted to enroll, at least half-time in graduate and professional programs pay their college costs. Direct PLUS Loans can be used to cover any educational expenses not covered by other forms of financial aid. The maximum loan limit is the cost of attendance minus any other financial aid you are qualified to receive.

Although you do not have to demonstrate financial need to borrow a Direct PLUS Loan, you must have a good credit history and have already applied for your annual loan maximum eligibility for Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loans.

Repayment on a Direct PLUS Loan starts once funds are disbursed; however, as long as you are certified as enrolled at least half-time, your payments will be deferred.

Prior to July 1, 2010, Federal Graduate/Professional PLUS Loans were available to students through the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFLEP); however, this program has been discontinued. General information on loans previously available is provided for your reference on CFNC. If you have an existing Federal Graduate/Professional PLUS Loan(s) through College Foundation, Inc., go to My Loan Status for details.

Interest rates and other information on Direct PLUS Loans for Graduate and Professional Students are available at Federal Student Aid website or by calling the Department of Education at (800)848-0979.
