Federal PLUS Loan Program

CFI makes PLUS Loans (part of North Carolina's Federal Family Education Loan Program) to parent borrowers of dependent students. Generally, only undergraduate students under 24 years of age are considered "dependent." Older students, graduate and professional students, wards of the court, and students who have served in the military are "independent" and must borrow in their own names.

PLUS Loans are not based on financial need. In addition, to be eligible for the loan, parents must not have an "adverse" credit history as defined by federal regulations. For each child enrolled in school, parents may borrow up to the full cost of attendance each year minus any other financial aid that the student receives.

In addition to meeting federal guidelines for a PLUS Loan, to borrow from College Foundation, Inc. (CFI), the parent also must have a North Carolina Connection. Your connection must be through one of the following means:

You are:

  • A resident of North Carolina; or
  • A nonresident of North Carolina and the benefiting student is enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, at a North Carolina college or university eligible to participate in the Federal Family Education Loan Program; or
  • A previous CFI borrower; or
  • A current or former participant or beneficiary in the North Carolina College Savings and Investment Program (provided that, the savings account was not closed due to a rollover to another qualified tuition program); or
  • You attended a North Carolina college or university eligible to participate in the Federal Family Education Loan Program.
  • You may check out the loan interest rates.

You may submit your PLUS Loan application online, or, download and print an application and send it to CFI.
