Description
Created by the 1989 General Assembly, the Nurse Scholars Program (NSP) was designed to address the shortage of trained nurses practicing in North Carolina. This program is a competitive, merit-based scholarship/loan program available to students who have chosen to enter the nursing profession, and is administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA).

Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
  • Present a minimum grade point average (GPA) of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Recipients must be North Carolina residents
  • Plan to enter a nursing program at a participating college oruniversity in the state of North Carolina or hospitals that offer nurse education programs which prepare students for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Be enrolled on a full-time basis: 12 credit hours per semester, unless they are enrolled in an RN-to-BSN program. RN-to-BSN students may be enrolled part-time.
  • ADN applicants must be admitted into an ADN nursing program in order to receive funding.
Financial need is not a criterion for this program. An 11-member Nurse Scholars Commission selects recipients for the award on the basis of superior academics (3.0 minimum grade point average on a 4.0 scale), leadership potential, and desire to practice nursing on a full-time basis in North Carolina.

Value
The annual value of the award is based upon the type of nurse education sought. Enrolled on a full-time, 12 credit hour per semester basis. Funding amounts are:
  • $3,000 per year for an Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • $3,000 per year for a Hospital Diploma in Nursing
  • $5,000 per year for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • $2,500 per year for a part time RN student in a RN-to-BSN degree program.
Half of the award is made available to recipients in the fall semester and the remainder in the spring semester. The NSP scholarship/loan is renewable. Subject to legislative funding up to three years. Up to 400 NSP scholarships/loans are awarded annually.
