National Board Certification

Teachers in North Carolina have numerous opportunities for professional growth and development. National certification of teachers is a top priority in the state which is reflected in the fact that North Carolina has the highest number of National Board Certified Teachers in the nation. North Carolina encourages teachers to earn national certification by paying the application fee, providing leave to work on certification materials and awarding National Board Certified teachers an annual bonus.

National Board Certification is offered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). The certification process is based on standards that evaluate teaching practice through performance-based assessments. The assessment process for National Board Certification requires candidates to complete two major components: a portfolio of classroom practice including samples of student work and videotapes of teacher instruction and an assessment of content knowledge administered at a computer-based testing center.
