National Board Certification
Teachers in North Carolina have numerous opportunities for
professional growth and development. National certification of
teachers is a top priority in the state which is reflected in the
fact that North Carolina has the highest number of National Board
Certified Teachers in the nation. North Carolina encourages teachers
to earn national certification by paying the application fee,
providing leave to work on certification materials and awarding
National Board Certified teachers an annual bonus.
National Board Certification is offered by the National Board
for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). The certification
process is based on standards that evaluate teaching practice
through performance-based assessments. The assessment process for
National Board Certification requires candidates to complete two
major components: a portfolio of classroom practice including
samples of student work and videotapes of teacher instruction and an
assessment of content knowledge administered at a computer-based
