The Troops to Teachers Program
Troops to Teachers is a U.S. Department of Education and
Department of Defense program that helps eligible military personnel
begin new careers as teachers in public schools where their skills,
knowledge and experience are most needed. Troops to Teachers is
managed by the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education
Support (DANTES). Reflecting the focus of the No Child Left Behind
Act of 2001, the primary objective of Troops to Teachers is to help
recruit quality teachers for schools that serve low-income families
throughout America. Troops to Teachers helps relieve teacher
shortages in high-needs subject areas such as math, science and
special education and assists military personnel in making
successful transitions to second careers in teaching. To learn more

In collaboration with the Department of Education and DANTES,
the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction has
established a state office, which is designed to attract new
teachers from Troops to Teachers participants and to assist those
