Established in 1989, the North
Carolina Model Teaching Education Consortium(NCMTEC) comprises a
number of public school systems, community colleges, colleges, and
universities, along with the NC Department of Public Education and
State Board of Education.
The consortium seeks to increase the number of highly qualified
teachers – especially minority teachers – in North
Carolina’s public schools by providing advice, professional
development, and financial assistance to employees of consortium
partner organizations who are actively pursuing their first degree
in education/initial licensure; clearing a lateral, emergency, or
provisional license; or seeking a graduate degree in education.
Consortium services include tuition reimbursement for undergraduate
and graduate education courses, reimbursement for college textbooks,
stipends for teacher assistants and other paraprofessionals who are
required to take leaves-of-absence from their jobs while fulfilling
student-teaching requirements, and test preparation seminars for
Praxis I Pre-professional Skills Tests and Praxis II Specialty Area
Tests.
