Description
Created by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2005, this program was designed to provide financial assistance to North Carolina college juniors or seniors pursuing a degree to become teachers and be a head coach or assistant coach in the public schools of North Carolina.

Eligibility
1. Be a North Carolina resident for tuition purposes
2. Present a 2.8 grade point average (GPA)
3. Enroll full-time as a degree-seeking student in a teacher education undergraduate program
4. Commit to teach full-time and be a head coach or assistant coach in a North Carolina public school upon graduation.

Value
The annual award will be $4,000 per year for students enrolled full time (a minimum of 12 credit hours for both the fall and spring semesters). One half of the award is made available to the recipients in the fall semester and the remainder in the spring semester. Recipients may renew the scholarship-loan up to two years. Funding for the program is contingent each year upon appropriations made available to the State Education Assistance Authority by the General Assembly.

Application Procedure
The dean of the School of Education or Education Department will nominate potential recipients. The North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority will make final selections from the nominees submitted across the state. Once selections have been made all nominees will be notified and recipients will receive a promissory note to complete and return to the SEAA.

Please note that students who are current recipients of the Prospective Teacher Scholarship/Loan, the Future Teachers of North Carolina Scholarship/Loan, or the Teaching Fellows Program are not eligible to receive funding from the PEC program.

Other Information
The PEC scholarship-loan recipient enters into a contract with the State of North Carolina to work full time as a teacher and coach or assistant coach in the State's public schools. One year of service as a full time teacher (minimum of 9 calendar months in a fiscal year) cancels one year of funding support received. Service repayment must be completed within five years from graduation. The interest rate for cash repayment is 10% and the cash repayment must be made within ten years of graduation.
