| Description |
The Future Teachers of North Carolina Scholarship/Loan program was established by the 2005 North Carolina General Assembly to provide scholarships/loans to college juniors and seniors who are seeking licensure to teach math, science, special education or English as a second language in North Carolina's public schools. This two-year scholarship-loan can be used at any North Carolina four-year institution that offers a teacher education program. Future Teachers of North Carolina is administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority.

| Eligibility |
Applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements- Be a North Carolina resident for tuition purposes
- Present a 3.0 grade point average (GPA)
- Enroll full-time as a degree-seeking student in a teacher education undergraduate program
- Commit to teach full-time in the areas of math, science, special education, or English as a Second Language in a North Carolina public school for three years upon graduation

The annual award will be $6,500 per year for students enrolled full time (a
minimum of 12 credit hours for both the fall and spring semesters). One half
of the award is made available to the recipients in the fall semester the
remainder in the spring semester. Recipients may renew the scholarship-loan
up to two years. Funding for the program is contingent each year upon
appropriations made available to the State Education Assistance Authority by
the General Assembly.

| Application Procedure |
Undergraduate juniors and seniors with 3.0 grade point averages or higher who are pursuing degrees that lead to teacher licensure in Math, Science, Special Education, or English as a Second Language are encouraged to apply.
Applicants must submit their application to the dean or chairperson of the
School of Education or Education Department. The dean or chair will then
nominate potential recipients based on the applications that are received.
The North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority will make final
selections from the nominees submitted by the schools of education from
across the state. Once selections have been made, all nominees will be
notified and recipients will receive a promissory note to complete and return
to the SEAA.
Please note that students who are current recipients of the Prospective
Teacher Scholarship/Loan, the Physical Education - Coaching Scholarship/Loan,
or the Teaching Fellows Program are not eligible to receive funding from the
FTNC program.

| Other Information |
Recipients must agree to teach full time (minimum of 9 calendar months in a fiscal year) in a qualifying subject area for three years within five years of graduation. Service repayment must be completed within five years from graduation. The interest rate for cash repayment is 10% and the cash repayment must be made within ten years of graduation.
