Description
The Future Teachers of North Carolina Scholarship/Loan program was established by the 2005 North Carolina General Assembly to provide scholarships/loans to college juniors and seniors who are seeking licensure to teach math, science, special education or English as a second language in North Carolina's public schools. This two-year scholarship-loan can be used at any North Carolina four-year institution that offers a teacher education program. Future Teachers of North Carolina is administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority.

  • Present a 3.0 grade point average (GPA)
  • Enroll full-time as a degree-seeking student in a teacher education undergraduate program
  • Commit to teach full-time in the areas of math, science, special education, or English as a Second Language in a North Carolina public school for three years upon graduation

Value
The annual award will be $6,500 per year for students enrolled full time (a minimum of 12 credit hours for both the fall and spring semesters). One half of the award is made available to the recipients in the fall semester the remainder in the spring semester. Recipients may renew the scholarship-loan up to two years. Funding for the program is contingent each year upon appropriations made available to the State Education Assistance Authority by the General Assembly.

Application Procedure
Undergraduate juniors and seniors with 3.0 grade point averages or higher who are pursuing degrees that lead to teacher licensure in Math, Science, Special Education, or English as a Second Language are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must submit their application to the dean or chairperson of the School of Education or Education Department. The dean or chair will then nominate potential recipients based on the applications that are received. The North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority will make final selections from the nominees submitted by the schools of education from across the state. Once selections have been made, all nominees will be notified and recipients will receive a promissory note to complete and return to the SEAA.
