Description
This federally funded scholarship program was established to promote student excellence and academic achievement.

Eligibility
Recipient must be a senior at a public, charter or private high school in North Carolina or have a GED certificate and be accepted for enrollment as an undergraduate in an approved postsecondary institution. Byrd Scholars are selected on the basis of demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and promise of continued academic excellence. The scholarship may be used to attend any accredited postsecondary institution in the United States. Financial need is not a criterion.

Value
Approximately 200 awards of $1500 each are made annually in North Carolina. Recipients are eligible to receive awards of $1500 per year for a maximum of four years if they are enrolled full-time in an accredited institution, make satisfactory academic progress as determined by the college/university, and are pursuing a course of study leading to an undergraduate degree. All awards are subject to the availability of federal funds.

Application Procedure
Applications are ONLY available to High School Seniors through High School Guidance Departments. Applications are available to Guidance Departments in October/November and are due in February of each year. Awards are announced in April/May.
