Description
The Golden LEAF Scholarship for independent college and university students is funded through a grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation. This scholarship is for students attending the member institutions of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. The grant provides scholarship funding for two students per class for two semesters at each of the 36 independent colleges and universities for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Eligibility
To be considered for this scholarship, each student must:
  • Enroll at any participating North Carolina private college or university in Fall 2009 as a full-time degree-seeking undergraduate student.
  • Be a permanent resident of a qualifying rural, tobacco-dependent county.
  • Have a 3.00 GPA in high school (incoming freshmen) or have maintained a 2.50 GPA in college (currently enrolled students).
  • Demonstrate financial need according to federal guidelines and have a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file at the awarding institution.
Additional Considerations
Priority for scholarships will be for students from families adversely affected by the decline of the tobacco industry. Recipients of other scholarships amounting to 75% or more of the total cost to attend the college or university will be given low priority. Selection criteria for applicants will not include value of real property owned by farm families. Students who have earned four-year (bachelor) degrees are not eligible for consideration. Scholarships are awarded two per class (2 freshmen, 2 sophomores, 2 juniors and 2 seniors). Current recipients may continue receiving the scholarship as long as all eligibility requirements are met. All students (new and current) must remain enrolled as full-time undergraduates and demonstrate financial need in order to receive the scholarship for the spring semester.

Value
The Golden LEAF Scholarship is valued at $3,000 for the 2009-10 academic year ($1,500 for the Fall 2009 semester and $1,500 for the Spring 2010 semester). A total of 288 scholarships (8 per institution) will be available for new and renewal students.

Application Procedure
An application is not required for consideration of this scholarship program. The financial aid director at each of the 36 independent colleges and universities is responsible for awarding scholarships to students who meet the criteria as outlined. For information and questions regarding the Golden LEAF Foundation Scholarship on your campus, please contact your financial aid director.
