Description
This grant program was created by the Higher Education Reconciliation Act of 2005 signed by President Bush on February 8, 2006. The National SMART Grant Program awards grants to eligible financially needy students who are pursuing majors in the physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, engineering, or foreign languages critical to the national security of the United States. The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.

Eligibility
Applicant must
  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be enrolled as a full-time third or fourth year student in a baccalaureate degree program
  • Be Pell eligible, awards are in addition to Pell Grant
  • Be majoring in one of the following categories: Computer Science, Engineering, Critical Foreign Language, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Technology. To view complete list of eligible majors, visit:

  • Have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average


Value
$4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study in baccalaureate degree program.

Application Procedure
Student applies for ACG by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). A student eligible for a Pell Grant and meeting the requirements listed above may be considered.
