Description
The Master's-Nurse Scholars Program (M-NSP) was an expansion of the Nurse Scholars Program in 1991. It was introduced to attract outstanding nurses to pursue a master's degree in nursing as preparation for them to teach nurse education programs and to provide nursing services to citizens of North Carolina. M-NSP is administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA).

Eligibility
Eligibility: Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
  • Present a minimum grade point average (GPA) of a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Recipients must be North Carolina residents for tuition purposes.
  • Plan to enter a master's level nursing program at a participating college or university in the state of North Carolina.
  • Applicants must plan to work as a master's prepared nurse or teach in an accredited nurse education program at a North Carolina college or university or in hospitals that offer nurse education programs which prepare students for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
Financial need is not a criterion for this program. An 11-member Nurse Scholars Commission selects recipients for the MNSP award on the basis of superior academics, leadership potential, and desire to practice nursing on a full-time basis in North Carolina.

Value
The annual value of the award is:
  1. $6,500 for full-time (9 credit hours per semester) study toward the master's degree in nursing, up to two years.
  2. $3,250 for part-time (6-8 credit hours per semester) study toward the master's degree in nursing, up to three years.
One half of the award is made available to students in the fall semester and the remainder in the spring semester. Preference is given to full-time students. The MNSP scholarship/loan is renewable, subject to legislative funding, for up to three years.

The MNSP application is online and may be accessed through the Apply Now link below.

Other Information
The MNSP scholarship-loan recipient enters into a contract with the State of North Carolina to work full time as a master's-prepared nurse or to teach in a nurse education program in North Carolina. Twelve months of service as a full-time nurse cancels one full year of MNSP funding support received. Service repayment must be completed within seven years from graduation. The interest rate for cash repayment is 10% and cash repayment must be repaid within ten years from graduation.
